County of San Diego General Plan -
Can Rural Growth be Smart Growth?

| The County of San Diego is updating its General Plan to address the issues of growth in a region rapidly utilizing the last of its undeveloped land in the cities. Today, the unincorporated area of the County comprises 84% of the total land area of San Diego County and is estimated to support 16% of the entire County's population. The current general plan for the unincorporated County has not been comprehensively updated since 1979 and has been the subject of substantial modification over the years. During this period, considerable growth and change has taken place, leading to the incorporation of a number of cities and to annexation of lands on the periphery of the unincorporated area. |
